The MIT Portugal Program announces its call for applications for the 2009-10 academic year. Each program is offered in association by a consortium of Portuguese universities, with the participation of MIT (US) faculty.

The Leaders for Technical Industries program will train a new generation of leaders for companies with a technological profile, and enable a new European paradigm in managing product development and production systems. Students participating in this program will

The BGG is part of the Melonomics project, a project sponsored by Genoma España to sequence the melon genome. Sequencing will be performed using a combination of the traditional BAC based approach, and the new sequencing technologies (454 and solexa).

The main task of the candidate will be to use available tools, as well as to develop appropriate tools for genome assembly and gene annotation.
The candidate should have a very strong background in comparative genomics, and should be familiar with the most common tools for genome assembly and gene finding and annotation. The candidate should also be very skilled with scripting languages. A background in Plant Genomics is
a plus.

PhD Position in Pediatrics

The Cystic Fibrosis / Pulmonary Research Group at the Department of Pediatrics III, Pediatric Pulmonology and Cystic Fibrosis Center, University of Heidelberg offers a position for a highly motivated and talented PhD Graduate Student (naturwissenschaftl. Doktorand/in,
TV-L13/2) for a research project investigating the role of microRNAs in the pathogenesis and as potential therapeutic targets for chronic obstructive lung disease in an established transgenic mouse model (Mall et al. Nature Medicine 2004 10:487-93).

This project is funded by the „Frontier“ innovation fund of the Excellence Initiative of the University of Heidelberg and is embedded within the inspiring environment of the Molecular Medicine Partenership Unit (MMPU) of the University of Heidelberg and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (‘Diplom’) in a Life Science related area (e.g. Biology or Biochemistry). Prior experience in molecular and cell biology techniques, cell culture and animal handling are desirable.

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (the Abdus Salam ICTP) and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) will offer in the years 2009 - 2010 a number of grants to scientists from Developing Countries (Central and Eastern Europe included) interested in taking part in the training and research activities carried out at the OGS laboratories. The Formal Linguistics Group at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona has
available one four-year research assistantship for doctoral study associated
with the funded project "Natural Language Ontology and the Semantic
Representation of Abstract Objects."

The basic eligibility requirement is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent by the
end of June 2009. Interest in semantics, the syntax-semantics interface, or
computational semantics
is essential; some prior background would be a plus. Knowledge of Spanish or
Catalan is not required but would be useful.

The scholarship includes a monthly stipend, coverage by the Social Security
system, and university fees related to doctoral study. The assistantship also
includes the possibility of applying for grants for short-term stays abroad.
Annual renewal of the assistantship will depend on successful progress in the
doctoral program and collaboration on the research project.

As the application for these assistantships will be handled through the Spanish
Ministry of Science and Innovation, individuals who are interested in applying

Our offer

-Successful applicants receive stipends of HK$13,440 (about ?1,280 or
US$1,730) per month for three years.
-The studentships require residence in Hong Kong for at least half of the
study period and they must result in a Ph.D. dissertation.
-Research-degree tuition scholarships are also available which will waive
tuition fees for one year.

Description:

Ph.D. Position In Visual Word Recognition at Ghent University

Applications are invited for a 4-year full-time PhD position in the domain of
visual word recognition at the Department of Experimental Psychology at Ghent
University.

As part of the Odysseus program 'Reading Research in Flanders', we are
investigating the processing of written Dutch words from a first and second-
language perspective.
In this project, we are collecting reading times for a large number of words,
together with their lexical characteristics. These data will be used to examine
competing models of visual word processing and to assess the differences in
visual word processing between Dutch and English.

Profile of the applicant:
-Master's Degree in Psychology, Linguistics, Computer Science, Mathematics,
Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
-A good command of English
-Experience with corpus-based research, mixed effect models, computational
modelling of visual word processing, and knowledge of at least one programming
language are an asset.

Duties:
-Monitoring of the behavioural studies on visual word processing
-Assisting in the assembly of a new corpus for Dutch and in the development of
new frequency-norms based on this corpus
-Construction and maintenance of an easy-to-use website integrating behavioural-
and corpus-data
-Integrating new findings in existing computational models of word recognition.
-Writing a Ph.D. dissertation

The grant starts with a probation period of 1 year, which is automatically
extended to 4 years after a positive evaluation. Applications, including a
